The Internet is an exciting tool that puts vast amounts of information at our fingertips almost instantly. With the click of a mouse, you can be chatting with friends, making an online purchase, doing research for a homework assignment, or playing a game with someone in another country.
However, there are also many risks on the Internet. The Internet is an anonymous place with no face-to-face contact. Thieves and predators take advantage of this anonymity, and pretend to be someone other than who they really are.
It is important to be cyber-smart and make your experience online a safe one. It is critically important that parents supervise their children’s Internet use. As we’ve seen all too often, trusting children are particularly vulnerable to sexual predators and other cyber-criminals.
For this reason, my office has developed an educational video and resource kit called ProtecTeens. This resource is essential for parents and teachers to educate them on how to keep kids stay safe online.
