Attorney General Responds To Inquiries Regarding Alleged Investigation
(Boise) - The Office of the Attorney General has received inquiries from citizens and the media regarding a recorded telephone message received by Boise residents last night.
In that message, a male caller states, "I am from Citizens for Trustworthy Government" and asserts that "the Attorney General has been asked to open a felony investigation" regarding a candidate for mayor of Boise.
The Attorney General has received no request for such an investigation from any law enforcement agency or governmental entity. The Office of Attorney General is not conducting any investigation relating to any of the four candidates for mayor of Boise.
After the close of business yesterday, the Attorney General's Office received, by fax, a letter from a private citizen urging such an investigation.
The Attorney General has no authority to launch criminal investigations at the request of private citizens and has opened no investigation. Citizens with evidence of violations of the criminal laws of the State of Idaho should report such alleged violations to their local law enforcement agency or county prosecuting attorney.
