Former Police Officer Sentenced for Battery
(Boise) – Former Montpelier City Police Officer Kevin Buttars was sentenced today to 90 days in jail and one year of probation for misdemeanor battery. The court suspended 75 days of the jail sentence and ordered Buttars to serve 15 days in jail. During a sentencing hearing in Soda Springs, Sixth District Magistrate Judge Ronald M. Hart also ordered Buttars to pay a $500 fine and $75.50 in court costs.
On January 25, 2008, a Bear Lake County jury found Buttars guilty of battery after a two day trial in Sixth District Magistrate Court in Paris, Idaho.
On January 7, 2008, the Attorney General filed an amended criminal complaint charging Buttars with one misdemeanor count of battery. The complaint alleged that on March 5, 2007, Buttars actually, intentionally and unlawfully touched or struck Jared Finley against his will by shoving and/or choking him and/or slamming his head into a wall and/or forcibly simulating sodomy on him.
The Attorney General’s Special Prosecutions Unit handled the case at the request of Oneida County Prosecuting Attorney Dustin Smith acting as Special Prosecuting Attorney for Bear Lake County.
