Former Minidoka Sheriff Kevin Halverson Sentenced
(Boise) – Kevin Halverson, former Minidoka County Sheriff, was sentenced today for misuse of public funds, Attorney General Lawrence Wasden said. Judge Robert Elgee sentenced Halverson to 90 days in the county jail, fined him $1,500 and placed him on probation for 3 years.
Halverson pleaded guilty on July 30, 2013, to one count of felony misuse of public funds. By pleading guilty, he admitted he knowingly used a Minidoka County gas card to purchase fuel for personal purposes. As part of his plea agreement with the state, Halverson resigned as sheriff July 1, 2013.
As a result of his plea, Halverson is prohibited from holding any public office in Idaho. The court also granted a withheld judgment. A withheld judgment means that, after completing his sentence and probation, Halverson may ask the court to dismiss the charges against him.
The Attorney General's Special Prosecutions Unit investigated and prosecuted this case at the request of Minidoka County Prosecuting Attorney Lance D. Stevenson. Deputy Attorney General Jason Spillman prosecuted the case.
