Alexis Mecham Sentenced for Insurance Fraud
(Boise) – Nampa resident Alexis M. Mecham was sentenced today for insurance fraud, Attorney General Lawrence Wasden said. Fourth District Judge Richard Greenwood sentenced Mecham to eight days in jail, fined her $2,000 plus court costs, placed her on supervised probation for three years and ordered her to perform 50 hours of community service. The court granted a withheld judgment and suspended $1,500 of the fine.
Mecham, 19, pleaded guilty on September 11, 2013, to one felony count of insurance fraud. By pleading guilty, Mecham admitted that she knowingly filed a false claim with GEICO Insurance Company for damages to her boyfriend's vehicle that allegedly occurred on July 21, 2012, while she was driving the car. GEICO Insurance later discovered Mecham had actually been involved in an accident and cited for DUI on July 4, 2012, in Valley County. However, the coverage on the vehicle had been cancelled on June 9, 2012, for non-payment. On July 9, 2012, her boyfriend had his policy reinstated and added collision coverage to the policy.
The case was investigated by the Idaho Department of Insurance and prosecuted by Deputy Attorney General Rondee Blessing of the Attorney General's Insurance Crimes Unit.
